The original 1910 acoustic recordings of the Eighth Symphony were always a compromise — a thousand musicians reduced to the width of a horn. The new restoration does not pretend otherwise.
What it achieves instead is honesty: the rumble of the organ, the distant brass, the sense of an event too large for any machine. You hear the struggle of the recording, and through it, the triumph of the performance.
