Schubert's Quintet, Played Like a Confession

Written in the last weeks of a short life, the String Quintet in C has always seemed to know something its composer could not yet say. This reading leaned into that knowledge.

The Adagio unfolded over seventeen unbroken minutes, the second cello's repeated lament passing from player to player like a secret. Vibrato was rationed; the exposed passages sang with a fragile, almost viol-like purity.

In the finale, the dance rhythms were pressed just hard enough to feel desperate. Schubert's farewell has rarely sounded so honest.
